Our skin requires a decent amount of daily exposure to sun, as the best way to optimize vitamin D levels in the body, but the overexposure can seriously harm it.
People have begun to avoid numerous traditional sunscreens recently, mostly due to the high levels of protective chemicals and additives, which can lead to serious side- effects on the skin over the long term.
Coconut oil is among the most beneficial ways to prevent sunburn since it can be used as a powerful non-toxic sunscreen. It is excellent for tanning, since it moisturizes the skin and conditions it, preventing dryness and redness due to a sunburn.
Research has shown that it is an advantageous natural method to protect the skin, and prevent skin cancer and sunburns, but does not inhibit the UVB rays necessary for vitamin D synthesis.
On the other hand, the addition of uncoated zinc oxide offers protection against UVA (the aging rays) and UVB.
In order to prepare a homemade sunscreen and enjoy the beneficial properties of coconut oil, you should combine it with numerous other healthy ingredients and natural oils that offer an actual protection against the sun’s rays.
The following recipe blends oils with higher SPF levels than coconut oil, as well as several common ingredients that are usually added to traditional sunscreens and are relatively easy to acquire.
The combination of beneficial ingredients below creates a natural and effective homemade sunscreen that can be used as body butter, which would be safe for the entire family to use.
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/8 cup sesame or jojoba oil
- 1 teaspoon red raspberry seed oil 20-30 drops
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 2 tbsp. beeswax granules
- 1-2 tablespoons zinc oxide powder (optional)
- Essential oils of your choice (lavender, rosemary, vanilla, and/or peppermint are nice)
On a very low heat, melt the coconut oil, beeswax, sesame or jojoba oil, beeswax, and shea butter together. As soon as the beeswax melts, remove the pan from heat, and leave the mixture to cool to room temperature. Whisk the zinc oxide in, and store the mixture in the fridge for about half an hour.
Afterward, whip the mixture using a stand or hand mixer, drizzle the red raspberry seed oil and the essential oil, and continue whipping until you get a homogeneous and light mixture.
Store it in a suitable container in the fridge and use it as any other sunscreen and reapply every two hours.
